How to Choose Suitable Dies for Veggie Softgel?

There are more and more raw material to make veggie softgel. And with the popularity of vegetable softgel, more manufacturers prefer to make vegan softgel. This requires JS to improve our softgel machine to meet such need. One of the crucial to modify is the rotary die rolls. We process softgel dies for gelatin, starchgel, tapioca as well as carrageen raw material as the softgel shell.

Veggie softgel needs bigger cavity to make. A relatively bigger die pocket or die cavity is required to make veggie softgel than that of gelatin softgel. For the same filling quantity and shape of softgel capsule, veggie raw material doesn’t have a good elasticity as gelatin, so its expansion rate is lower to hold filling material.  

The utilization rate of dies space for veggie softgel is lower than gelatin softgel. Since making a same size and shape softgel capsule requires a bigger die pocket, this result in a same die roll size (e.g. 250*150mm) has less number of pockets on the mold. When the softgel machine runs a circle, the softgel comes down less number. The same softgel machine speed therefore is slower to produce veggie softgel. Besides, to making starchgel or tapioca softgel, the machine itself runs relatively slowly.

Softgel Die Lip design differ. JS has single lip, bi-lip and triple lip softgel dies to offer. In vegetable softgel manufacturing, bi-lip and triple-lip are more suggested. Our experiment and test running shows bi-lip is better for carrageen material, while triple lip works well for starchgel. We also change the cutting edge to make a better cutting. A good cutting is directly related to a good seam on softgel.
